Background:
Founded in 1636 and further endowed in 1676; became grammar school in 1884. Set in residential area of Wirral close to Dee estuary and east side of Caldy Hill. School buildings are harmonious blend of traditional and new. A two-storey 1930s sandstone structure house English and mathematics. In 2005, 250,000 was spent expanding and improving school library located in old school hall. Science and humanities in five-storey block. Specialist technology college status from 1996; specialist language college status. New three-storey blocks for technology and modern foreign languages; languages block has two fully-equipped language laboratories. Also new drama studio, multimedia room, and music classrooms.Year 7 pupils choose two languages from Chinese, French, German, Latin, Russian, and Spanish; wide choice of 32 A-levels, including law, Russian, Chinese, law, sports studies and psychology. Sporting strengths: hockey, rugby and cross-country; rugby under-15 team were semi-finalists in Daily Mail schools competition; hockey under-16 squad were semi-finalists in national schools competition. Extra 10 acres purchased to develop quality cricket, hockey and synthetic pitches. Combined Cadet Force numbers 150. Exchange visits to various countries, including first British/Chinese school exchange; annual teacher exchange with same school. One significant drama production each term; also one school concert. School supports local and national charities; Christmas hampers for local community; raises 7,000 for various charities, including Jeans for Genes and Cancer Research. Health-promoting school. Sportsmark (2001); Sportsmark Gold (2003, 2006); Investor in People status (2002, 2006).
