Background:

Although Halsnead School is not a church school, it was first opened in the old church hall on Dragon Lane in 1872. In 1990, there was a 'disastrous' fire in the separate junior building, which had opened in 1968, as a result of which the junior department was incorporated with the infant school. Further refurbishment was carried out in 1992 and 'extensive' computer facilities installed, including Halsnead TV and access to the community information network. Other facilities include a stage with 'full lighting and sound capability', and the school is 'renowned' for its dramatic productions. It expects children to 'enjoy school life, to work hard, to develop respect for one another and their property, and to keep the few school rules that are designed to ensure that every child can learn effectively in an orderly community'. Halsnead offers a 'broad and balanced' curriculum based on the core subjects of the national curriculum. From time to time, teachers organise after school and lunchtime activities for children. These range from football, netball and gymnastics to chess, guitar, keyboard and drama. The school has been recognised for its 'high quality inclusive education for small numbers of children with learning difficulties', and is proud to have been granted an Investors in People Award in 1997.
