Background:
Thatto Heath was formerly two schools, a junior school built in 1903 and an infant school built in 1913, which were known locally as the 'council schools'. They were amalgamated in 1991 to create the largest primary school in St Helens, which is currently over-subscribed in some year groups. The school is situated in an area of 'relatively high' unemployment and was awarded community status in 1985. This was followed by 'extensive' new building which included a 'large community base to support the 'well-subscribed community education programme'. In 1998, the school received an award from Education Extra for commitment to extra-curricular activities. Lessons are given in brass, violin and recorder and there is also are also two 'very successful' choirs. The school takes part in inter-school athletics competitions and there is also an after-school club, football, netball and dance club. Throughout the year, visits are organised to places of interest which, where possible, link to programmes of work. In 1995, the school was awarded the standard of Investors In People, reflecting its 'successful community and team approach during that particular period of school development'. There is a 'strong and active' Parents' Association that raises money for the school and also a 'very enthusiastic' group of parents and relatives who help in the school.
