Background:

Hillside High School is a mixed comprehensive school for pupils aged between 11 and 16. It was formed in 1972 when Bootle Girls' Grammar School combined with Balliol County Secondary School and was on two sites until 1987 when the new building at Breeze Hill was completed. Since then, facilities have been upgraded regularly. ICT facilities have expanded rapidly and the school has recently installed a state-of-the-art system of cabling to make the best possible use of the Sefton learning grid and broadband access to the worldwide web. There are two major whole class computer rooms, with two smaller ICT teaching studios for groups of about 20 pupils. In September 2004 the school became a designated Specialist Science College. Hillside has been awarded Sportsmark status by Sport England for promoting the benefits of sport to a high standard. Inter-form competitions take place throughout the year in athletics, swimming, football, cricket, cross-country, badminton, basketball, netball and rounders. The school has also achieved the following awards: Artsmark, DfES achievement award, Recognition of Quality award, Specialist Schools Trust and Healthy School award. The school aims to provide working and learning environment.
