Background:
Built in stages between 1936 and 1960, this 'happy, active, positive' school is situated in the suburban Allerton district of Liverpool. It replaced a school originally built by the Booker family for the children of their employees. The school grounds contain a pond, nature garden, and wildlife garden. Post-war extensions provided 16 classrooms, some of which are now used as a music room, an audio-visual room and a computer suite. The National Grid for Learning has appointed it a leading school for the implementation of information and communications technology (ICT). Pupils are set in ability groups for numeracy and literacy, where they receive extra support in smaller groups. This setting is also used for science from Year 5. Academic results are 'excellent' in all areas. Sporting activities include girls' and boys' football, rounders, cricket, athletics and swimming. There is also a 'strong musical tradition', with around 180 pupils receiving tuition in an instrument and playing in one of the two orchestras. Children raise money for charity each year and school facilities are funded through the work of the parent-teacher association. A 'positive partnership' between home and school is promoted.
