Background:
The junior school is housed in a Victorian building and in February 1997, the infants moved to a new wing of the building. Other recent work includes the total replacement of the heating system and external windows in the junior school. All classrooms are carpeted, with 'light, modern' furniture, with 'well-stocked' libraries and 'well-resourced' departments. The buildings and grounds are 'bright, spacious and attractive' and there is a playground and playing field. Music and sport are continued in out-of-school clubs, while trips and outings contribute to the broader education of the students. The school emphasises its 'very strong' links with the local community, and 'mutual feeling of belonging' shared by the parishoners and school. Many events such as harvest, Nativity play, Christingle's and Mother's Day involve both school and community participation. The children raise money each year for charities such as the Children's Society, NSPCC or National Children Homes. The 'Friends of St James' committee makes valuable contributions to the school and parents are welcome to help in the classroom.
