Background:

This 'large, warm and welcoming' school, close to the centre of Prescot, was built in 1973 and extended seven years later. The school is over-subscribed and another classroom was added in 1999 to accommodate the growing numbers. A four-year plan is underway to transform the grounds, and in the playgrounds the themes of 'under the sea' and 'around the world' are being created by local artists. Pupils are provided with a 'broad and balanced' curriculum and English is a 'particular school strength'. Procedures for promoting achievement in this area include a 'Shakespeare focus' for each year group, a listening partner for every child and Radio Evelyn, through which pupils broadcast to the school once a week. Special educational needs support staff have written a booklet for parents of children with learning difficulties to outline the assistance available to them. Children can receive tuition in a range of musical instruments at lunchtime or after school. The 'most effective' after school clubs involve music, and the choir and ensemble practise in a sound-proof music room. The school now includes the word 'community' in its name since it has so many links with groups in the locality. Pupils also communicate with an orphanage in Romania and have sent them gifts and photographs. The school'strives to maintain a 'strong partnership' with parents and a handbook has been written by staff to advise parents on how to support their children's education at home, at all stages and in every subject. Once a week, parents and families attend a class assembly.
