Background:

Oakdene County Primary was founded in January 1973 in its own grounds with playing fields and 'pleasant' views. It is a one-form entry school with classes organised according to the age of pupils, and is over subscribed. The school aims to produce a 'climate of unity, friendliness and trust, with as few rule as possible but with routines and procedures that help children work and conduct themsleves in a controlled and orderly way'. Great emphasis is placed upon presentation of work and pride in achieving good results. Good attendance is encouraged. The school is listed as 'excellent' in the Chief Inspector's annual report for 1994-95 and 1996. It offers a range of extra-curricular activities including a school choir, orchestra, and dramatic and musical productions, which are all of a 'very high standard'.
