Background:
The school opened in 1940, although its sixth form dates from 1961. Housed in self-contained school buildings on a 30-acre site, it is over-subscribed, with 1.25 applications per place. Facilities include a sixth-form block, 16 science laboratories, five information technology suites, eight technology rooms, two language laboratories, arts theatre, sports hall, gymnasium, and music and art suites. The school gained a European Curriculum Award in 1993, and maintains links and exchanges with Denmark, Holland, France, Germany, Norway and Spain. It has international representatives in cross-country, rugby, basketball, rhythmic gymnastics and athletics, and has been a national finalist in rugby and basketball, in addition to 'many' county players. The school organises inter-house competitions, including in public speaking, and 'encourages a competitive spirit'. A weekly magazine is produced for parents and there is 'strong' pastoral care, based on a House system.
