Background:

Opened in 1967, the 'well resourced' school is 'attractively decorated, inside and out'. It has been subject to vandalism throughout its history, some of it quite serious, but CCTV cameras and a security fence have now reduced vandalism and crime to 'almost zero'. This has also enabled the school to create a more 'visually attractive' external environment. The Grange serves the local estate, within which there is a 'broad range of social problems', and 50 per cent of children are currently entitled to free school meals, while the school also offers a breakfast service for the benefit of all families. Almost 15 per cent of primary-aged pupils within the LEA who have a statement of special educational needs (SEN) attend The Grange, which has three designated special unit classes, providing 35 children with structured educational programmes and, for many, highly successful integation programmes. The school is 'committed to the raising of its educational standards by providing the best possible education for all its children' by providing the 'most efficient and effective' education that it can. It is proud of its 'high standards across the curriculum', especially in art and PE. Information and computer technology (ICT) is a 'strength of the school' and facilities include 45 networked computers in a computer suite and in classrooms. All pupils have access to the internet and their own e-mail addresses. The school offers a 'broad range' of extra-curricular activities. These include football, netball, swimming, athletics, hockey, dance, drama, board games, recorders, keyboards, internet and the school newspaper. The Grange enjoys 'good relations' with parents and there is 'significant' parental involvement. This includes fund-raising and other support provided by the Friends and Relatives of Grange School (FROGS).
