Background:

Thornton Hough is a traditional village school which was founded by Viscount Leverhulme in 1904. Partly housed in mobile classrooms, an extension was added in 1992, provided by the current Viscount Leverhulme. The school is in an 'idyllic' village setting and serves a wide rural area. The school is oversubscribed, with many out-of-area applications refused. It has a well-tended school garden, and has close links with two village churches and local groups such as the Brownies, playgroups, Clatterbridge hospital, work for nearby Claire House, a children's hospice, poopy appeal and local pensioners. Tuition is offered in musical instruments and there is a school choir. Pupils take part in inter-school athletics and swimming galas. The school participates in local education authority initiatives, including Old Masters and Young Poets. There is a tradition of extra-curricular activities including chess, choir, country dancing, drama, cycling proficiency and maypole dancing. The school has a 'long established' programme of visits, including York and London.
