Background:

Established in 1957, Prenton was a middle school between 1971 and 1983 before reverting to a junior school. Over its many changes the school has built a 'good reputation' within the community where it is viewed as a 'caring, supportive' school. It shares a 'pleasant, open' site with the infant school in a residential suburb of Birkenhead with a very mixed catchment area. The governing body is 'very supportive', taking its role 'very seriously', while the staff is 'hardworking, caring and committed'. The school has eight classes, with two parallel mixed ability classes in each year group. It makes 'good use' of the accommodation with a library area, art, design and technology room, music room, and a fully networked computer suite. Every classroom has its own computer station, and the school is soon to be connected to the internet. Prenton Junior encourages 'high academic standards' in all subjects in addition to offering a 'wide variety' of extra-curricular activities including football, netball, gymnastics, choir, recorder groups, guitar, civic awards and table tennis. It has a 'particularly supportive' Home School Association which raises 'large amounts' of money for the school. The school also has close links with the Claire House Hospice, for which it regularly raises funds.
