Background:
Founded in 1849 as a boarding school, it then became an independent day school, before becoming grant-maintained and now a voluntary-aided Roman Catholic grammar school; specialist technology college status from 2002. State-of-the-art laboratories and technology rooms, opened by Princess Royal in September 1999; £3.8 million building project, due for completion in 2005, to provide new classrooms, art rooms, drama studio, kitchen and dining room. Excellent sports facilities including sports hall, all-weather playing surface and sports field. Proud of reputation for producing outstanding music; many pupils study extra-curricular instrumental and choral music. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Artsmark Gold (2005); Sportsmark; DfES achievement award.
