Background:
Founded in 1931; administered until 1974 by Cheshire education authority; since then, it has been responsibility of Wirral education committee, local governors, and Department for Education and Skills. In Bebington in centre of Wirral, draws on pupils from Wirral, Cheshire, and elsewhere in northwest. National reputation in several sports, with individual pupils being national representatives in lacrosse, netball and volleyball. More than 200 girls receive musical instrument tuition, with choirs and orchestras giving regular concerts. Drama studio is base for regular stage productions. A £10 million re-build was completed in in 2004. Combined specialist language and humanities college status. Over-subscribed, with three applications per place. Sportsmark (1999); Sportsmark Gold (2004); DfES achievement award (2004); Leading Edge status.
