Background:
St Matthhew's is situated in a densely populated urban residential area of high unemployment, approximately four miles from the centre of Liverpool. The school has strong links with the local community and many parents have recently taken up adult education as a result of these links. St Matthew's includes the Rainbows programme as an additional extra for those families who have suffered through divorce, separation or bereavement. The school aims to 'fully extend pupils academically, socially and morally within a supportive and caring environment'. There is 'a strong commitment to promoting the Catholic ethos' and to treating each child as a 'unique individual with a God-given dignity'.
